The Angle(s): Cubs right-hander Clay Holmes (2-4, 4.26 ERA in 8 Cubs starts) takes the bump in Game 1 of Friday’s doubleheader following a tough outing against Cincinnati where he yielded six earned runs and walked five. Holmes has struggled with control since transitioning to a full-time starter role in Chicago, and his elevated 1.35 WHIP is not pretty.
The Red Sox open with left-hander Alec Gamboa (1-0, 1.16 ERA), who has served as an effective opener and bulk-reliever all season. In his 31 innings across 20 appearances, Gamboa has held opponents to a minuscule .215 batting average while posting a 1.06 WHIP. His exceptional run-prevention numbers will keep Chicago’s bats quiet early before turning things over to a well-rested Boston bullpen.
At this price, backing Boston home at Fenway is a no-brainer IMO.
The Bet: Red Sox +106 (3%).
